There was a discussion about why I had taken it in this location (I felt the wall was similar to the wall I had seen the original image on – as I was trying to replicate as near as possible the original Banksy image) and whether this image would work in a different location. Nick asked to see the pre-edited original shot, which he said he preferred. This was well received by the group, who felt it was an accurate representation of the Banksy image.

Nick suggested we look at the book ‘The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction’ written by the German cultural critique Walter Benjamin in 1936. I emphasised that my approach to the work was purely aesthetic but that I fully appreciated the culturally complex religious and cultural interpretation of the work, which would – for most viewers – be the viewpoint from which they would view the work. There was a long discussion about how these images would be interpreted due to the issues around veils and the religious connotations that may be taken from the work.
